Lets say I have a tank at 84 degrees f. Will the higher water temp increase the metabolism of the fish and cause an increase in that fishes growth rate?

yes it will, but 84 is too high, aim for around 80-81, and even that temp depends on what you are keeping

I dont believe that you will see much difference in a tank at 84 than a tank at 80.
Warmer water does increase growth rates, but i dont think that a few degrees will have much significant impact.

plus, 84 isnt ideal. I would stick to between 78-82

Well in my tank ive got a pbass and a rtc x tsn. I increased the temp to combate an ich infestation but they seem to love the water temp anyways...theyre much more active.

In my own observations the warmer water like I run (82 -83) seems to make fish more active and eat more. But I think water changes play more in fish growth. More water changes = faster growing fish. This is just my own opinion.

I agree, water changes play the biggest role, along with proper nutrition

Completely depends on the fish in mind.

All fish have a target temp range and should be kept within it. (ie true coldwater fish will stress out and die in that hot of water). When the fish is least stressed it will have the most growth (yes there are slight exceptions in aquaculture).

With increased metabolism comes increased stress, food consumption, waste byproducts, greater possibility for disease and hormones (a big reason for W/Cs in these circumstances) but not necessarily hyper growth rates.

If you are not fully versed in these things, don't experiment on your fish as it will only stress them out to no avail.

Read, study and learn everything you can about the species you intend to keep. Check to see if there have been any University research studies on them or the family.

In my experience… warmer temperatures definitely increase growth rates…

But naturally this is rated on a curve and either extreme can have ill effects. I would suggest for most Cichlids 72~84 would be an acceptable range. So a fish raised at 82* would grow faster than that same fish raised at 74* (assuming nothing else changed)… but I would not expect any noticeable difference between 80* and 83*…

But while temperature is affecting growth rate we have to accept abnormal or extreme temperatures will have other impacts as well. This can include both good and bad effects.

And of course, like others mentioned, there are at least a few other controllable factors that will simultaneously impact growth rate, such as water changes, diet, reduced stress, etc. But these additional factors do not in any way discount the fact that warmer temperatures do increase metabolism which then increases growth rates.
