Here are my water tests...

Nitrate 40
Nitrite .5
Hardness 300
alkaloinity 120
ph 6.2

can anyone tell me hwo im doing and what i need todo to fix it if there is a problem ... thanks

What is the ammonia? How long has the tank been set up? What is living in there? The tank is not cycled. Please read my sig for a solution.

How often do you maintain your tank? How much water do you replace? Ammonia and nitrites must be kept at zero although you did not mention your ammonia a tall. Nitrates is high. Keep it at steady 20 and below.

I do 15 % water changes every 3 or so days.... I have piranhas so i realize it gets alot of waste in there... since i am feeding them feeder fish :S... and i know im not supose to but i do and they are healthy feeders.. i raise them myself (rainbow trout fry)

Can you please be more specific? How many piranhas do you have? Are they really piranhas? What size are they right now? At this rate, you are going to do more water changes than your current one. Your nitrates is 40 and this actually indicates you should do more water changes.

I have a 40 gal tank with 5 RBP's in them at about 3- 4 inches each... and yes they are really piranhas :D... haha.. I just did a 30 or so % water change... see how that helps... what kind of water hardness should i have?? or does that matter?

Ammonia and Nitrite should ALWAYS read 0. 15% water changes every 3 days is the same as 33% a week. You should be doing more as Nitrates are high. Another problem is that your tapwater may have existing nitrates in it.

Concentrate on your ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. I do hope you will upgrade in the future because your tank is already showing signs that the nitrates may not be kept under control without doing plenty of water changes.
