Water tests

IMO, unless you are just starting out in the hobby, test kits for freshwater aren't really necessary. I've kept fish for 30+ years and the only test kit I ever used was for one for pH. Provide your fish adequate filtration, don't overfeed, don't overstock, and keep up with your water changes. Observe your fish. If they don't look normal, change water. If you test your water and find you have elevated ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels, what are you going to do? Most likely change water any way.

You can learn a lot from observing your fish, and they seem to be the best test kit.

I have to say I disagree with the above posters who are saying don't bother with test kits. It's easy to say that once you have 30 years experience but if you are new to the game I would say it can't hurt to test and you may just learn quicker. Lets say you do have a problem in the tank, so you come on MFK and start a thread asking for help. The first thing people will ask is for your water parameters. Without a test kit you will be shooting on the dark.

My advice would be avoid the "complete kit" sets as they have more than you need. Go for the separate liquid kits from someone like Sera, JBL or API. To start with I would buy 2 - ammonia and nitrate. This will help with most things. Then if you choose fish that require specific ph levels maybe go for PH and GH, but you can build up slowly.

My choice is always the Sera ones.

Just my 2cents.
