whats a good tank turn over rate for stingrays? I had an idea of just using a pond pump with a sump, cheaper for doing the same thing.... Plus they have higher gallon per hour rating... how high of a turn over do you guys have? I know since rays are from the river they should have a higher one... so im just trying to decide how fast it should be on a 240 thanks

match the pump to you overflows my 220 has about 10x per hour

As much turnover as possible..

The river ecosystem has little to do with the reasoning behind a high turnover rate for rays..

Freshwater Rays have a funky osmosis system, so they release large amounts of concentrated urea (ammonia).. especially if you are feeding them right. In a closed body of water, ammonia spikes will kill a ray pretty fast. This becomes worse if you are working with a smaller body of water (>100g)..

The more turnover the better the ammonia breakdown. This is what is most important.

What should my water turnover rate be in a 2000 gallon pond? I am trying to figure out on filtering the pond. About how many rays should be kept in it? The dimensions are 15'X8'X3'.

I have a 1200 gallon pond, turnover is 1500 gallon/hour. But I also circulate very much inside the pond, with air. Water quality is perfect.

In my opinion the huge amount of turnover used by most here on the forum is because the volume of their filter is quite small. I use a filter of 200 gallon and the turnover is optimal at this flow. Take into account that the bacteria also need time to do their work :)

[edit] if you want to see the set up, there are pictures of it on my site. I would love to see pics of your 2000 gallon!!

IDK about how much to use. As I had a 210 with a eheim 300gph pump. And I had motoros breed in it. I turn my tanks over 1-3 times an hour. As Bioballs work better with slower moving water over it. As long as you have lots of bio you will be fine.

Personally I think turnover is not as important as circulation. Strive for 6-10 times per hour with your wet dry as they are most effective this way, however use powerheads.

My new tank is 7x42wx30h and I have a 3600 dart pump for ciculation however have a 3500gph vortech powerhead in there for internal water movement and plan to get another. Hi oxygenation and water current are much more important for rays and quite honestly the more current the happier and healthier your rays will be.

I strive to run 10 times the tank volume through the wet dry per hour. My 480 gallon systems each cycle 4800 gallons per hour through their wet/drys.
