water way to hot what do i do

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i get the same in summer here with my tank going up to 30c (supposed to be 25c).
The fish seem fine with it and the biofilters are ok (infact work better hotter )... but to cool it down i found that using a fan worked well... blow a desktop or room fan onto the tank and that will shave off a couple of degrees ;)

just make sure its well oxygenated as the warmer the water the lower the oxygen content is... use airstones or powerheads to agitate the surface if you see the fish breathing heavily or gulping air at the surface

thanks for the input guy
i use aire pumps i have 3 aire stones in the tank and 2 in the sump
btw i live in the land down under lol

I had the same problem so i installed a ice cap artic fan and put it on the same timer as my lights. not only did it bring my temp down but it also aggitated my water surface.

:D

^ And evaporated the water 3 times as fast, lol.

humans "sweat" to cool down... sweating (cooling down) involves evaporation of a liquid...if the tank is hot thats the best cheapest way to cool it down below ambient room temp.... alternatively he could buy an aquarium chiller (refridgeration unit) but that would involve spending a lot on the unit and the running costs ;)

yup , ive had to resort to this myself many times here in Sacramento. Being a HVAC-R guy I never use my AC  As long as you top it off with RO water its not that big of a deal.

Another method I have used to cool the tank with success is I packed a small styro cooler with the reusable ice packs (frozen ofcourse) And then I ran 50 feet of wal mart air line through it all around the packs etc attaching an air pump to it first then running the outlet in the tank.
Hope this makes sense.

The fish god in the local neighborhood has a 3000L tank with four or five giant gold and silver Aros... his tank temp average is 32/33C. I was shocked years ago when I first saw his tank and saw the temp but he says they, their parents, and their grandparents were breed and raised in very warm water and know no difference. They are very healthy and happy. He changes about 300L of water every three days.

At the LFS (better say outdoor market) the tanks with Aros are up to 35C! God only knows what temp they are at in those metal shacks all closed up in the late morning/early afternoon before opening time.

And you definitely don't want to know what my current Discus tank temperature is...

...it's Thailand only the Saltwater and Reef guys worry here!!!

Really, if you have a clean tank and do regular water changes I don't see any reason to worry... unless of course it was a rapid temperature change or worse a roller coaster ride of temp fluctuations.

Here's a pretty easy and cheap DIY chiller.. I was thinking about in a different thread. I'm going to have this same problem this summer, one of my tanks is on the 3rd floor of my townhouse and gets *very* hot up here in the summer.
