waterchange Q/A

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes i gravel vac my tank every wc. my tank maybe a lil overstocked. lets face it da large pooh is not an interesting subject when guess are on deck. p;us im not a big fan of gravel so i make mine spread out very thin

now for another Q/A? what about water evaporation my sump looses not a lot but a noticeable amount of water. im thinking due to evaporation. any other have an issue with it.

waw i didnt kno most of you change the water in the actual tank, i thought it was always done in the sump, and then tunred back on.

You can do it this way of you want myles provided you only want to water change less than the sump volume. On some larger sumps, people do it this way since they can use their sump pump to empty fast (permanent T and bypass tap is used).

We lose water to evaporation and fish splash. A built-in overflow box feeds the wet/dry filter sitting on the floor behind our 300 gallon tank. The water level in the main tank remains constant, but the water level in the wet/dry filter drops with the loss of water through evaporation/splash. In our filter room, we have a 55 gallon tank full of heated conditioned water that is plumbed into the main tank. By turning a valve, we can add water to the main tank which ultimately raises the water level in the wet/dry filter.

On water change days, we unplug the pump in the wet/dry filter, and dump water out of the big tank. After the tank is refilled, we turn the pump on again. The only time we had some die off of BB in the wet/dry filter was after a 7 hour power outage, resulting in a small ammonia reading post-power outage. Two weeks ago, the power was out for over 9 hours. We added enough water to the tank system (which flowed into the wet/dry filter) to get the bio balls submerged. This action prevented any die off of BB, and the water parameters remained good following the power failure. When the power came back on, we dumped enough water out of the main tank to lower the water level in the wet/dry filter to its normal level.

mom ive seen pics of your setup that pretty nice.
well i only did my w/d as a temp before i decide to do a permenant 60g. so far all is working out just water loss has me sumped for ideas.
now im looking for a pump that putsout 1400-1600 gph at 4'-5' head.

Its just the same as when you have a tank run with canisters or HOBS, all you need to do is put in water treated with conditioner to bring back the level of the sump. You really don't want the sump to dry out.
