So my new house I've moved into has a pond an waterfall. I've been running the waterfall for a hour or two almost every day hoping that would be enough to keep it some what clean. That is not working. The waterfall is about 5' tall an has several steps downs that are empty. So I've been thinking adding some sort of media to them. Like maybe some lava rocks or what else I'm not sure. Or maybe i just need to run it more often. Any ideas about how to better use the waterfall to filter my pond would be appreciated

Its hard to tell in the pics, but is it green from free floating algae or brown from tannins or solids? If it's green, invest in a good uv. If there are fish in there, you should have some kind of biomedia. If you do put in biomedia (like lava rock), you will have to run the pump all the time, because if you shut it off every day, every time you do, the beneficial bacteria will start to die off. You should have some kind of filter pad in there to pick up the floating solids and dissolved solids (which helps brown water). I would say that if you get a good pond filter, it will have bio and mechanical sections, combined with an external uv sterilizer, you should be all set.

The water mostly green with some solids from old leaves that I could not remove. I was hoping that I would not have to buy a filter but it sounds like I will. I have a 18 watt uv sterilizer that I'm running on in my 55 gallon. Do you think that would be enough for my pond I'm not sure how many gallon exactly but I think it's between 200-350 lol.
Thanks for your

I think 18 watts would be enough, depending on how much sun it gets. To just clear up green water, you don't need as much wattage as you would to actually sterilize the water from bacteria and parasites.

Nice waterfall pond by the way, a little work and it will be great.
