  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I went from gravel to sand, sand it to easy to clean everything stays on top

Sand, basically what everyone else has said.

It isn't that hard though you just have to manage it a bit. The way to clean sand is by siphoning just an inch or more off the top of the sand. That's what I hear anyway.

i just converted to sand 5 mins ago from gravel..and i have to say, it does look good! and i just cleaned my old gravel. so in conclusion, sand is easier to rinse, but gravel is alot easier to collect....picking up grain is a pain!!---but sand is awsome, try it you might like it.

I never clean my sand. Sometimes I will stir it up and the filter will catch everything but thats about it. Nothing really gets into the sand to make it as dirty as gravel.

:iagree:

I never siphoned my sand since i have them..i just change water... as a matter of fact i have a turtle who poops like a cat:ROFL: the poops are crushed into tiny pieces that comes along with the water so its important to have regular water change:popcorn:

I just switched from gravel to sand a few days ago and I LOVE it so far. I have about 160 pounds of large rock and fish in the tank. I left the fish in because i didnt see the point in taking them out. I tried to leave the rock in but ended up removing them all. I disconnected my filters b4 the processes. then I tried different methods to scoup the gravel out and a large net works best. then i siphoned the smaller gravel rocks up with the tube part of a gravel cleaner which lowered the water to a normal water change level. I bought 50 lbs of black sand at petland for $40. washed it really good while I sturred it in a bucket to remove the looser lighter sand so I doesnt clog the filter. I then put the whole bucket into the water and slowly spreaded the sand around. after doing this a few time it was all in and put the rock back. let the water sit a hr or so and turned the filters back on. the next morning the water was cristal clear again.

here is the old gravel:

with sand, all the debris stays on the surface, you just have to "spot vac". sand is much cleaner than gravel.
