hi people can you tell me what the advantages to having a wave maker in a fresh water tank and tell me why you would have one thanks in advance.

I have two 12000LPH wavemakers in my 360G just to keep detritus suspended so that my sump can get it.

I have two in my fry tank with sponge filters connected to the intake. I use them instead of power heads cause instead of the water blowing out straight and making a lot of current the water is pushed to the surface witch allows the fry to be able to swim around. It also pushes their food around the tank at the surface then around the tank witch ensures they all get feed

Many tanks have wave makers but probably a lot more don't. You have to look at your own tank conditions to see if you are among the ones who would benefit.

They add movement to the water (which some fish prefer greatly) and water movement can be beneficial in a lot of bioload circumstances. (See the 2 posts above mine.) For example, if I had a tank that had a large bioload or I was regularly vacuuming a lot of food / waste from the substrate, I would absolutely look at this option.

without my wavemakers i would have several piles of poop where there are deadspots from sump return. as mentioned above it keeps these piles from settling and keeps suspended in the water column so they can be filtered out.

I use mine to keep detritus suspended so my filters can remove it, as an added benefit it distributes the food much more so everyone has a chance to get their fair share.

Keeping the poop moving is the main reason I have them. Many of my fish will hover in front of one periodically just to fight the current. Some fish require heavy current to be healthy.
