Wave's

Just curious, why do people use wave makers? for Living rocks etc and corals?
Or just for looks? Because i thought wave makers would make the tank harder to care for, for some reason lol

To simulate natural conditions for their corals. It also helps the reproduction of corals. I just use powerheads on all the time but I'm not doing corals.

I have use a few different name brands and have found the Tsunami to be one of the better models out there.

I would suggest using a Visa-Jet power head with any wave maker. Most the other power heads I have used break thier impeller shaft in a very short amount of time when on a rapid "on/off" timer like these.

Another option I have used that I like is the "squid". These work real well at alternating two return lines off of one pump. You must be very carefull to only let filtered water get pumped thru these though. THe gear inside gets stuck if debris gets inside it and won't alternate anymore.

Hope this helps....Joel

I once saw a fiter return tube that was run through a homemade device like an ocillating bar sprinkler, no timers, no on/off, no extra electic parts at all. water flow forced it to swing back and for and it worked great, I am suprised it is not yet a commercial product.

Guppy;

THere are devises like that made for return lines or power head outlets. Some are just spinning bars that the water makes them spin in circles, others are a little more fancy with internal propellers that turn a worm gear that makes the outlet rotate back and forth. Zoo med makes a power head that sweeps back and forth that uses a gear and paddle inside it's water outlet. They are pretty cool but the gears get stuck pretty easily from debris getting in them.

here is a few examples;
