Thinking too much into it, shim the gaps, end of story. Composite shims are awesome, you can break them exactly where the stand ends and you can barely see them. Pretty sure every one of my tank has shims under it. I don't think putting foam will do enough to distribute weight off the corners, if you think about it the 1/2" thick foam or whatever you buy is not going to compress enough only in the locations that are touching the floor to all of a sudden have your corners all adequately supported, even if the foam compresses into nothing under your tank that only adds a bit of foam support under the corners. Even if the corners start to touch the ground with the plywood they will not have as much support as they would if you shim it with something hard, you are alleviating the problem a bit but not solving it as I think even with the stand on plywood and foam I feel your tank may twist eventually.
so your just saying to place shims anywhere the bottom of the tank stand that isnt in full conact with the floor? If i do that wouldnt that put to much pressure in certain areas? Like if i just shim one coner of the tank stand , no where else around the perimeter?

40 gallon long aqueon tank and stand

Oh man.. I was thinking this was a 280g monster or something. I wouldn't sweat this too much at all. I'm assuming this aqueon stand has a perimeter base as opposed to a sheet of wood, basically the size of the tank footprint? Either way, like said above, set it directly on the floor where you want it. Set the tank on the stand, check for level, shim between the floor and base as needed. Add substrate, check for level and continue to check for level as you are filling the tank with water.

Okay. But just to be clear. I set the stand on the floor . Right. Check level. Almost dead on. Check to see if there are any gaps between the floor and the bottom of the stand. There are. In the corners and pther places around the stand perimeter. So if its level , your saying not to shim? Which it is level, but there are gaps in between the stand and the floor.

Don't sweat some very small gaps between the bottom of the stand and the floor. These two mating surfaces are never going to be perfectly flat. I used stick-on felt furniture sliders so level the Aquatic Fundementals stand that's under my Aqueon 55g pictured below..

I would fill it up and enjoy your fish, little 40g be fine, the floor will relaxe under it.
