What ever happened to Bio Spira? There was tons of anecdotal evidence of it working like a charm. It kind of half worked when I used it. In retrospect I would have just thrown fish in the tank and cycled normally.
 
As for the shirmp - it'll work, but it'll stink up your fish room/house.
 
for my .02 there's always the option of circumventing the cycle completely and using a powerful algae scrubber or ozone system to process the nitrogen products.

no doubt, I had a half an uneaten shrimp in the tank yesterday, I left it in last night to see if he would eat it last night. I got home from work tonight......My room stinks....bad.
