Well okay, but forgive my skepticism on the efficacy of ANY media for removing nitates. That aside, that is a saltwater article, I believe the OP was asking about FW cycling.

What ever happened to Bio Spira? There was tons of anecdotal evidence of it working like a charm. It kind of half worked when I used it. In retrospect I would have just thrown fish in the tank and cycled normally.

for my .02 there's always the option of circumventing the cycle completely and using a powerful algae scrubber or ozone system to process the nitrogen products.

no doubt, I had a half an uneaten shrimp in the tank yesterday, I left it in last night to see if he would eat it last night. I got home from work tonight......My room stinks....bad.

With that urine idea i'd be afraid that anykind of pollutants or Meds would leech into the water...But hey if you like the potential of doped Fish
