How is a it waste of energy? They are thermostatically controlled devices and one (at least the one he has) isn't able to keep the temp where he wants it. a second will use more power but it will get it where it needs to be and shut off until it drops below the set threshold.

Your fish will be fine at temperatures between 74 and 76 degrees. Your swordplants may need fertilizer or more light.
well what if he has fish that need or thrive at higher temps? or has an ich outbreak? i would upgradeor add additional heating capability since OP stated a problem, rather than just say it isnt. (which may be true btw..)

The fish that the OP listed don't require higher temperatures. I don't worry about ich. I quarantine all my new fish and have only had 3 cases of ich in 30 years of fish keeping. All 3 cases involved clown loaches.
Thank you everyone for all your answers. Last night I played with the thermostat on the heater, took it out, and shook it around. I saw some flash on the bottom, got me scared at first. I put it back in the water and unplugged the heater. I plugged it back in while keeping an eye on the heater in the tank. Slowly it raised my temp back to 84-86.
On a side note, in my first post I said my tank was going down to 74 degrees when it was really 64 degrees.

Make sure you have good lids 
makes all the difference in the world...with my house set at 70 degrees i have trouble keeping my tanks cold enough without heaters in the tanks for my goonch or sharks. Glad to see ur problems solved tho. You could also put plstic on ur windows?
