ok so i am wanting to lower my ph, since it is at 8 and i would like it somewhere around 7. I know there is RO, but that just seems like a pain for a 180g. Are there any other options? Any help would be great.

Drift wood or Peat can lower ph. What fish are you keeping that can't handle 8?

did the driftwood and that lowered it about .2. South americans, i would like to get a true parrot but they don't handle the high ph so well and i don't want it to get hith

Use peat granules in a media bag in your filter. Fluval is one of several manufacturers. It's cheap, it last a long time, you just need to start small, test your water frequently, and increase it gradually until it maintains the pH you're looking for.

Hey Nick! Do you know your gh/kh reading? You can add peat, tannins from wood and almond leaves all day long and your PH may not budge much at all, it depends on your overall hardness and buffering capacity. My water is very high in calcium (basically it's 50% water/50% bone) If it were harder it would be ice lol... :irked: No HITH in this house though and I only do SA's. Hoplarcus Psittacus are awesome BTW..:D

That's why I mix RO. It's not that bad if you set it up right and spend the $$$ on the right valves, floats etc..

You could cut your tap with collected rain water if the skies are clean around you and it rains often enough.

Then it does rain, right?

What I did was clean out my gutters and set up a hose to fill a tank in my basement. When it starts to rain, I throw away the first few gallons since they have city dust at high levels. After that, the water seems to be safe for use. Of course, I don't need it. My tap is amazon soft and I have to buffer it to prevent pH from crashing. It was just for a spawning effort.

Tap is straight 7.6. Not terrible but not ideal either. My main issue is the calcium content. Have you looked up your municipality water reports? They should be online (free) and no hobbiest should go without one. :D
