Ways to Raise pH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i buy the 15 lb bags at Petsmart.. it's big chunks, so it doesn't bring your PH up as high or as fast. i put one bag in a 55 gallon tank.. in the 210 there are probably 2 or more bags worth mixed with black gravel and river rocks (we combined the substrate from 2 tanks when we started up the 210).

the substrate for the 180 is the same.. the rest of crushed coral/black gravel mix and the crushed coral/ river rocks mix from the 150. that is probably 2 bags worth of crushed coral also.

thankfully I'll only have this tank for acouple more weeks then i get my 125 in connecticut!
but in the meantime i think I'm going to find some crushed coral and work out how much to use. will the coral keep the tank constantly at this pH so it doesn't fluctuate?

What if you don't want to do crushed coral substrate? Would putting a good amount in the sump or overflows do the trick?

yes..some people put it in the sump, some in bags in their canister or HOB filters.. any way you use it it'll make your PH higher, and it will remain high and not fluctuate significantly.

i put it in my substrate because i LIKE it.

why do you want to raise your PH? i hold the opinion that consistent is often better than constant adjustment.

well its not really constant. I did a water change and forgot that i didn't have any ph up stuff and the water i use has a ph of like 6 so it dropped sooo significantly i lost a plec and id really just like to keep it up more. how much coral would you put for every say 10 gallons? or do you just eyeball it?

only time i would split up a 15 lb bag is if i were to start a 10 or 20 gallon tank. then i would probably only use 1/3 or 1/2 of the bag. but it's been years since i've had anything smaller than 50 gallons..

in fact, i'm getting ready to sell everything i have that is smaller than 150 gallons very soon.. i'm not starting over with new fish.. and if i do (if trajedy strikes) they can grow out in the 150 or 180..

so only put a little in at a time.. wait a day to see what the PH comes up to and then add more if you want.
