Just be aware they might have hooks in them seen as they are wc, if you know anyone with a metal detector get them to scan the rays as it puts your mind at rest. I think it depends on who exports them as to weather they will have hooks or not, i hope they dont. Flowers are definitely more fragile just be patient with them and good luck.

so what does he do if infact he discovers it has a hook, i am confused!

if its still alive and has a hook it will live. fish pass hooks.by the time it gets to you from the day it was hooked out of the river will be weeks maybe months,if its survived that long with a hook chances are they will live just acclimation will be the issue after that point.fish that die from hooks usually die right away or very soon after and the ones that are in very poor shape more than likely do not get shipped out unless you are dealing with those german scabs.

If he does discover a hook there's not a lot he can do im just saying it happens. Your right they can live with a hook inside them but not for long as it will restrict the ray from feeding as the food goes the same way as the hook. I know plenty of people that have had rays from Germany with no problems but everyone is entitled to their opinions.

i am half german myself nothin against crouts but their is one company for sure.
and about the hook their are so many variables.depending on how and where its hooked many fish can pass the hook.also cheap hooks will breakdown expensive high quality hooks will never rust doubtful that they use those though, but i have seen a picture of a buddies ray on this forum passing a hook that looks like a quality hook and not broken down.i have also seen and herd of people catching fish with half rusted or parts of old hooks coming out of them.common practice is pinching the barb but with the methods they fish for rays it would be almost impossible landing very many with out the barb!! myself i have never had a ray pass a hook but i am very experienced fisherman and i know when fishing if the hooks too deep to unhook you just cut the line and the fish will probably live.

the method they fish is called the line method.connect numerious hooks to one long line and string it out across a long area with a weight on it.they use bait on the hooks and fish usually deeply swallow the bait.when sport fishing you feel the bite when using live bait sportfishing pull before the fish swallows it so u just hook in the mouth.let it swallow the hook than your gauranteed to catch it but also gauranteed you will have to cutt the line or kill the fish.
when line fishing they leave the hooks for many hours or days so i would emagine that some are dead on the line when they pull them in.i would much prefer somebody catching my rays on a fishing rod sport fishing ,but that would be to hard and they wouldnt catch as many i bet a heck of alot more would survive.

unless sombody knows of other exporters that have better means i would love too know so we can buy rays from them.

I do have a metal detector, and i will check them just for the heck of it.
Also, after i get them eating i usually use medications such as prazipro or formaldahyde
Would you guys do otherwise? i feel coming from the river, they might have some kind of parasites or worms, who knows..

Jesse, you lurker! 9 posts and you joined in 2009?! Glad to see you on here and I wish you the best of luck with your rays. How long before the tank upgrade? I don't know rays, but I don't see why the usual quarantine with prazi and formalin wouldn't be sufficient. And don't forget about the endless supply of earthworms we have every time it rains around here. They keep in the fridge in shallow water for over a month exactly like blackworm, believe it or not.

--And I stole a bunch of pothos cuttings from around the office for you...I'm sneaky like that.

Thanks, good to see you on here too! yeah those 9 posts are recent, i love reading articles but i resided why not join in on some talk. Most of the people i talk to at work do not keep rays, or monster fish so its nice to get feedback from those with other experience.

And i guess that means we ALWAYS have a large supply of worms ha I might need some advice on where to look.

indeed, i just want to cover all aspects of getting them established and healthy.

When people refer to max size on a ray are they talking about the disk being 36'' or the nose->tail length 36''?

36" is disk, hehe, they get frikking huuuge! Same as tiger rays. I had an offer 1 week ago, 300$ each, just couldnt do it, even tho i wanted it so frikking bad, they look amazing. To me its the nicest rays out there. But i had to think of the rays, then myselfe. I dont have the space for a billion gallon tank for these guys. I already have 9 rays aswell :)

And about the hooking debate going, all of my 9 rays are wc, never seen a hook, i dont think this is to common. Even tho it happens.
