the species pictured is not a giant softshell

I'm going to have to disagree. Sorry.
Maybe you're thinking of the pelochelys Bombroni.

pelochelys are found throughout the Guangdong Province.
Just google it....

I do see a problem eating endangered animals.

I see no real problem with them eating that turtle, If he were not endangered, he most likely lived a much better life and died a much better death than the burger you just ate, or the fried chicken you grabbed at walmart, that were born in filth, lived a life of pain and unhappiness and was then slaughtered by having an electric something shoved up their anus or having their throat slit and being beaten with a hammer.

Unless it was farm raised, REAL farm, not the factories they call farms to make it sounds better, I know someone who farms cattle for food, and other than the hormones he shoots them up with, they live normal lives, and are killed humanly..

He was an old guy though, and endangered to boot, and should have been left alone... but that's not how it went.

in before lock.

just like everybody else people eat tortoises

I want to have a word to say about this. First of for the ones that dont know me Im a huje turtle fan and actualy keep a softshell turtle as a much beloved pet. I however have not problem (even if I dont like it a bit) that other cultures and people eat turtles and tortoises. BUT I think a few things had to change around here. First of the most pertinent issue is that the animals had to non endangered species and subjected to quotas and limits to make the harvest sustainable. The reason is simple:"if you like to eat turtles you have to keep big healty turtle populations, other wise you will be the last generation to fell the taste of their flesh". Wich corrently not happening and many turtle species are being eaten out of existence. I think the inabitants of that province should think a bit before taking a bite of what their eating. Not very far cientists are strugling to "clean a mess" caused by the fishermen(mainly by them but also due to polution and habitat distrucion). We had to get as low as 4 shangai giant soft shell turtles for China to wake up and do something about it. If yesterday harvest was lower, you guys maybe still had a chance to enjoy this guys both in the wild and at the table. Now its better, you had your bellys full yesterday but your child may not even see one alive.
Second preferably thouse animals should (like all food animals) be raised and bred in captivity in natural farms, with natural diets, wich would make all of us healtier.
And third for peat sake find a way to respect the normal ways to kill, conserve and sell the meat. Have some mersy by the animal that will full your gut. DONT bucher it wille he still is alive and find a way to to humanely kill the animal, wich pre-excludes all metods normaly used in food markets. Its not triing to mess with their culture, its not triing to be duche bag, its just plain comon sence. If you fell hurt then the animal will fell hurt. Just try to imagen the ABSOLUTE HORROR OF BEING BUCHERED ALIVE:eek: If they find a way to do that, then both the animals and human would live in a much better world

That all sounds good but the people who dominate this particular industry dont have the time to concern themselves with humanely raising and killing animals when there are paying customers waiting for food, they have to get this stuff to their marketplace as soon as possible. When demand surpasess what the so called farms can produce we know where the meat mongers will turn to in order to keep the revenue flowing....and the Dodo will have more company.

That allways shocks me on these wildlife programs and stuff they show markets in little fishing villages with stunning arrowana and RTC's and brycon etc if only they had a way of selling them directly to the hobby they would make like a years pay from one arrowana. That turtle is amazing its a truly sad sight to see:(

Whats the problem here? Is it a threatened or endangered animal?

Also who wants to bet that the 5lb bag of Tyson chicken you bought at the grocery store last Sunday cost more then these people make a day, maybe even a week?!?
but yet he can afford a descent watch, can afford to smoke(pack on top of turtle), a digital camera, a computer, and internet access?:D not trying to argue, just thought it's funny.

i agree its no big deal if their not endagered and its legal though, but not for me.
