They don't do well and bloat badly when they're under 4". Larger than that they're pretty tough to kill, but they're hard to breed because they're so aggressive, males usually end up just killing the female.

They're not rare in the wild, just the hobby.

So they bloat up on high protein meaty foods? why not keep them on a spirulina diet like tropheus?

they are becoming rare in the wild due to habitat destruction, introducing of foreign species like bass and tilapia, pollution etc.

this is probably the first time in a long while that anyone's bought them into the states.

bloat is water condition related and stress related. foods in my opinion play a lesser part. feed them good foods you would feed any other fish. spirulina wouldn't hurt either.

Hey guys,

I bet you appreciated the long wait. :nilly:
Fish number two came yesterday, it seems to be doing well. Unfortunately, I discovered yesterday evening that fish number one (larger and established) can just barely squeeze his fat little belly through the egg crate divider.

However, aggression doesn't seem too bad, and there are lots of hiding places for the smaller fish, so I don't think I'll have to banish either one to the confines of the twenty gallon.

The divider is in now, hopefully within a few days the first fish won't be able to fit through and I'll have sort of an "incomplete divider", where the smaller fish can swim throughout the whole tank, and the bigger fish only gets half.

I've been doing five gallon water changes daily (35 gallons per week), and I got some algae discs (only think I could find with spirulina) that they like to nibble on.

The computer doesn't want to let me upload any pics for some reason, but I've got three tank pics (without divider), and three crappy pics of the new fish, maybe they'll upload tomorrow.
