well guys i just got a new 8 inch JAG!!! the only problem is he came from a home where he only ate FEEDERS! so... just needed some tips on how to wean him onto pellets and shrimp!
thanks guys!!:):)

My Jag had me trained for a while to feed him crickets exclusively. He was a spoiled brat about accepting other foods until I starved him for a few weeks straight. The whole time I had to resist the urge to feed him. I just let him watch as I fed the other tanks and bypassed his. Eventually he went for the pellets, then (because it's actually cheaper) pieces of Market shrimp. So, in short, I recommend that you starve his ***. For his health and nutrition, a few weeks w/out food is better that a lifetime of feeders.

so far... he tried a flake and spit it out so im happy that at least he is trying something.. i heard you should souk the pellets in garlic water? is that true?

ok thanks... how long can they go without food? ? ? ? ?

Last year I was flooded out of my home. It was just a day short of 2 weeks before they let people back in to my neighborhood. So my Jag went with no filters, air pumps, and no food. I still have the beast today and he is no worse for wear.
Two weeks with no food, he'll be hungry, but he'll be ok.

Just starve him for a few days. Try feeding him pellets. If he doesn't take them, remove them and try again in another couple of days. He will soon realize this is is only food source and start eating. It wont be long and he will be readily eating them.

Personally I would try going to frozen foods first or bits of shrimp.

Then slowly go into the the pellets or flakes.

Having other fish in the tank that eat the pellets will help. The jag will see them eating them and natural instincts will tell it to compete for the food. Just don't offer anything else until he eats them. He might sulk for a week or more and refuse but it will eventually eat them.

My piranhas are spoiled with raw shrimp ATM, and wont eat anything else (besides live fish). Its a tough situation to get out of...I wish I had some advice, good luck.
