Weekend 600 Gallon Pond Build

I'm trying to understand how you connected the wooden frames to one another. I see you have an additional board on each end that you use to screw in a frame and according to what I see, it appears that each frame end fits perfectly, but I tried it myself with a few pieces of wood and it doesn't fit flush like yours. Is that additional board the same dimensions as the lumber you are using or is a different size ? How do you get it snug and flush like that ?

I did check the video, the only thing I can think of, even though I see the frame ends fit perfect, there must be some overlapping wood not visible in the video, since the 2x6 end includes 1.5 inches from the other 2x6 vertical piece which would make it wider. So when you fit the one frame end into it, the 2x6 would actually be fitting on to a 7 inch width (5 1/2 + 1 1/2) am I right ?
