:eek:I am an aquarium newbie. We have 2 bettas left one of the males has gone to a better place after we had him for 18 months. We also have some goldfish. We had to take an extended weekend trip and leave the fish. I always feel guilty. I tried an automatic feeder but came back to a gunky mess in the thing. The pet shop staff suggested feeder blocks. I thought ok they should have adequate circulation in the different tanks and I will not have to feel so guilty about leaving them. Well for the 1st time in just over a year my fish all got ick. The bettas had it worse than the goldfish but it was a lot of work to get them all healthy again. NEVER AGAIN for the feeder blocks purchased at Petsmart.

How long was your extended weekend trip? 4 days? Your fish will be fine if left for four days without food if they are full grown. Those feeder blocks are bad in my opinion.

Feeder blocks have caused the demise of my fish only once. The once and ONLY time I ever used them and will never use them again for that matter. They are bad news.

Thanks for the heads up on those feeder blocks! I have never used them myself and by the sound of things I never will.

same for me, sounds like they might have gotten ick from the stress of the new tank on top of the weird object shooting out food.

i have used gel feeders many of times fish love them and eat em right up no ich

dunno if it was the feeder block.IMO it was probably stress, but hey,I dunno.
