Weeksi growth rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a very familiar topic... I brought up something similar about two years ago, I almost sold the fish off!

When I first got it about 7" in August 2013. This is a wild caught weeksii

It had external gills forever, probably up until 10 1/2"

Fairly recent pic. So in two years it went from 7" to 13"

One of the best suggestions given me with this shy bichir is to feed after lights are out. Ever since I did this, I have seen the growth. I feed massivore, Omega One algae wafers, tilipia filets, various mix of seafood. Weeksii take patience but its worth it!

Cheers. Tilapia and massivore are best. What seafood mix do you use ? I have adopted the regime of feeding after lights out as well

Weeksii's really are a mixed bag when it comes to growth rate. The majority it seems do have extraordinarily slow rates of growth That said they are an amazing bichir well worth the effort.
I have had the good fortune to pick up one with fast growth and one with moderate growth rates. My big one grew out from 8" to 22" in under 4 years. My mid sized one is now at 16" from 8 inches in 2 years.

OP back to your question on how to get the best growth. The basics are important, good water change regime, temps on the warmer side, varied diet and most important item is what DMD stated. Feed at lights out, Weeksii are passive feeders and easily out competed for food by their tank mates. Through trial and error find out the max amount of food you can dump in at lights out with out there being any left in the morning. This is a pain as in the process you will have to do some tank cleaning in the morning until you find the right amount I feed every other day and put in about pound of smelt or prawns and it is all gone in the am.

I really encourage you to have patience with these fish, it is well worth it

DMD, you have a great looking young weeksii, you will not regret getting it! I would bet that as it grows you will see a more active fish and have a great looking monster in your tank

I dug up an old quote from Burbotman about my weeksii. I am so glad now that I did not sell the fish off. It is still shy but it is quite impressive when it does come out. It will only get better as it gets bigger.
