Weeksii activity level compared to others

Decided to bring this one back from the dead... with an update

During the last year I had put the weeksii up for sale for a couple months on a local forum, pretty much right after this whole topic was done. Thankfully no one bought him. I changed the feed routine to pellets being fed after the lights went out. Basically I never have seen this fish eat so it must be a Zombie bichir. On occasion it gets a little shrimp, krill or tilapia but the majority of its diet is pellets which include Hikari sinking Carnivore, Dainichi sinking XL, Omega One Algae wafers.

Anyway I just continued to do night feeds, water changes, etc and now my girl has put on a bit of size and is not as shy as she was. At this stage I thought her external gills would be completely gone but still show little nubins of them.

Here she is now, named Nessie like the Loch Ness Monster

How big was she when you started this thread? i Still have my two weeksii and they have literally only grown from around 4 inches to 8 inches in a matter of a year and a half.

I have had 2 laps and 2 teugs with them that have started out smaller, ate way better and put on about an inch a month in growth and have since been graduated to my main tank. they are probably big enough to go in the main tank, but based on their behavior i dont think they would ever get any food in there :(

no lights on the grow out tank, so not the best pic

Original post was 12/16/13 and she was 9", so 3" of growth since then. But the activity level is very noticeable now with her actually swimming around with the large cichlids.

Looked at some old posts on a different site and when I got her was August 28, 2013 and she came in at 6". So she did put on 3" in those first few months and then started to slow down a bit with a year to put on another 3". Lately seems to be looking bigger and bigger each time I look.

The weeksii shares the 210g with a delhezi that is 9", When I first started this post the del and Weeksii were almost identical in size with the weeksii being a bit bigger bodied. The del seems to have stopped growing at 9" and the weeksii seems to be putting on the size now. Even though I dont see any aggression between them the del tends to stay away from the weeksii. No log pile.

Looking back at my posts too I see I also had more bichir... well I rehomed three and just kept the weeksii and delhezi.

how well does your weeksii feed with the cichlids?

Never. It does not eat with them at all. Pretty much zero feeding activity during the day. The del comes out when it smells food and may get a pellet or two off the bottom but the competition is fierce.

Im considering selling my weeksii for that reason. I have 7 bichirs in my main tank with a giant gourami and the gourami gets about half the food i put in there but all the bichirs have learned to be pretty quick to get to the food. Even if i tried to feed at night, the other bichirs would certainly get to the pellets first.

I only have held on to them this long because theyre rare and i really like the look of them. But i hate the idea of trying to do something special for one stubborn fish....well, two in this case.

Thats a tough call. I guess thats why I wanted to post an update to tell people that some fish require time and some patience to develop. If I sold mine off I would never have got to see it blossom into what is becoming one of my favorites.
