Weening my fish off live

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bass are a bit tricky, might not want to starve for more than a couple days when young. one thing that helps, if your bigger bass is more accepting the other will catch on if u stop feeding him bloodworms. that being said i housed a 18" azul for a friend and he went 45 days without touching anything from earth worms to feeders frozen and everything. when he did give in the only food he'd eat was massive and he would slam it like nothing I've seen.

I do just the opposite. I stretch their bellies with bloodworms and build up their appetite. Once they get bigger they will feel the worms are not enough and will turn to pellets without starving. Just got to keep throwing pellets with the worms. Do it before they get too big. Save yourself the headache. Bigger one may require a feeder or frozen in between pellet training to prevent starving.

Do you heat your worms up in warm water or drop in a frozen cube?

They don't have any trouble putting it down? Chances are yours are larger than mine lol. I'm trying to keep these guys well fed so they continue to grow at a nice rate hah

All my cichlas start off as 1.5", definitely not bigger. Pack them with worms 3 to 4 times a day! They will feel the need to eat. Caution: Make sure you got good filtration.

The way I see it is to give them a variety of food from pellets, frozen, and feeders. Mines are able to go back and fourth with each type of food. I try not to over feed my fish as to me this create them to be really spoil and a lot of food will be wasted. If you feed them just a small portion they tend to be more excited when you feed them. If you want to get them off feeders and go on pellets. I would first try to get them use to frozen. Start them out with market shrimps. and then stick a piece of massiovore next to it and try that for awhile. And then slowly try the pellets alone and see what happens. Its all about patience. what ever they don't eat take it out right away. Or try adding another type of fish in there that will eat the food so it gives them a competition. It will be a starving game for awhile which is perfectly fine. Fish in the wild isnt always on a full belly. Good luck Ive gone through this process for awhile now!

Have you found that your guys grow slower off of live food? Is this true, or not true? Also will they pick at the block until its gone, or if its too big not even bother with it? My guys dont really pick off the bottom. Right now my filtration is pretty decent for the grow out tank their in so that shouldnt be too much of a problem.

I definitely have the patience to do this, just trying to get as knowledgeable as possible. Ill give that a whirl when I get paid tomorrow. Gotta wait to buy the pellets hah.

Well heres a little update, left my guys for about 4 -4.5 hours and went back to give it another try. This one was much more successful. Cut up 6 SMALLER pieces and dropped them in. Big guy ate 2, small guy at 3. The 6th fell into the rocks and i was unable to get it out. I have a plecco, rainbow shark, and some type of misc algea eater in there, will they take care of this extra piece? I took a video so hope you guys enjoy. I dont like feeding on the left side of the tank for that exact reason lol. Tank glass is a little dirty right now from the water dripping down earlier that i didnt bother wipping up yet (from the net fishing out old food). And yes, I have gloves on when I do this, the smell of those fish on my hands sucks and lingers forever lmao

Glad you are progressing with getting them off live food. ;)
And yes, the other fish will take care of the rest, they will leave only skin and bones which will float up to the top where you can fish it out.

From the video, it appears you don't have an issue with feeding.
