weighing down tops of aro tanks?

glass tops break.. arowana are very strong and violent when spooked. if you feel the need to use glass, get tempered glass (only for the tops).

bash me if ya want for using egg crate, i have and still do use it. it's weighted down at all the corners with various things, old tank decorations, a box of aloe vera juice bottles, the light fixture, a couple heavy ceramic serving dishes, two of my water change drain hoses.

i have a design in my head for eggcrate and plexiglass lids.. but i haven't found a real good way to cut the plexiglass at home yet.. i've ruined a couple 4' x 4' pieces so far.. i'm afraid to cut into the 4' x 8' piece because i don't want to ruin it too.

but when i figure it out, i'm going to cut the plexiglass 1/2" longer and wider than the egg crate(so it sits on the frame) and cut all the holes that the filter tubing and wires go through. then cut it in half lengthwise and put hinges on it then use silicone to attach the back section to the egg crate. that will make it so i have a lid to lift so i can feed the fish (there is a 2" x 2" hole cut in the egg crate for feeding). it will also cut down severely on the evaporation, and give the egg crate more support and more weight so i won't have to put as many heavy things on top.

I had a 72" Coralife lamp fixture on my lids and my aro was able to knock that out of the way as well as the lids twice and made its way to the floor. I ended up putting a 2x4 wooden rectangle frame around the top perimeter of the tank and that increased the weight enough to keep the aro in.
