Weight of tank on floor?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How old is the house? Do you know which way the floor joists are going on that floor? It is preferable if the tank is perpendicular to the joists. Outside walls are generally better because they are load bearing. Some inside walls may be load bearing but most are generally not. Now everything really depends on the house, but I would say if you can put the tank on an exterior wall perpendicular to the floor joist a 125 should not be a problem. Your call though.

Hey everyone. Ive been wondering about weight on my floor. I live in an old house.. the only space in the house I have for tanks is on the 2nd floor in a bedroom. I have a 90 gallon and a 29 gallon side by side on the inside wall of the room. The other wall is an outside wall. The house doesnt seem to sturdy. I want to do a bigger tank but kind of scared too. Is the outside wall safer or the inside wall? And ive never actually heard of a tank going through the floor. Has anyone seen or heard of it happening? What do you guys think? Should I not bother with a bigger tank? Any info or advice is greatly appreciated thanks guys!

Hello; As is common when this question is asked on the forum, several often encourage the OP to go ahead without having actually seen the structure of the house. How can the strength of a structure be known sight unseen? In my current house some of the floor joists had been compromised with large cuts. I had to sister additional joists in place. The only way I know of to have some assurance of a sound structure is to have someone who knows about structure have an actual look at the structure.
In case some missed this thread a while back here is a link to it. A look at the pictures should give pause, they did for me.
