Weir or not to weir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats a weir, i would of called that a built in overflow.

I use weirs on my drilled tanks, though If I were you I would use a durso standpipe rather than holes at the bottom (the durso is cheap and easy to make, and is virtually silent rather than the constant gurgling).

However, you are probably better going bottomfed weir. There is a discussion in the DUY thread, but basically you have two weirs, the one you have drawn, and another one in front which is higher and forces water underneath it, thus preventing gunk from building up on the bottom of the tank.

lol i think everyone is a little confused to where this over flow is located and the purpose is for. this is an emergency overflow for the sump. I think this would be a great idea but I would go with the side drill just so that you dont have to have another hole in your stand can sit it right on the floor and still pipe it to the drain. Great job! Very good idea!

In the states they call them built in overflow box but everyone else calls them Weirs. One reason why weirs don't work well in a freshwater setup is the algae build up in it makes a pain to clean also you have to make sure you water level have to be at a certain height. So if you went on vacation and your water evaporated pass the mark then you are SOL.

LOL I suppose im the one with no clue lol I re-looked at the diagram and see that its the tank not the sump. Sigh... When im going to do my tank/sump set up I am thinking of doing the whole overflow/wier set up, looks good, altho i have been told that it makes noise with water flowing down over the top, depending on how loud that is can make it more annoying. I was thinking of using some filter floss as a dampener and prefilter.

Unless your tank is 4 feet high or more you won't hear a difference.
