Hmm everything I've read and found online has said don't mix africans and americans. I'm planing a 90 and doing some larger americans could puting some larger more aggressive africans work in there?

Yes, some people frown upon it but many people do mix cichlids from all regions with successful outcomes...The only reason why I mix is because I don't want to have to buy another tank to seperate them and they're getting along fine anyway...also I use just dechlorinated tap water in all my tanks, I don't keep my africans in higher pH...reason being is many of the fish in pet/fish stores have been bred for generations and generations. If I knew the fish I was buying was wild caught though, I would then try replicating the water params its use to.

& although water perameters are important, PH and hardness isn't everything.. Proper stocking and size, setup, maintainance and schedule are far more important tasks to focus on..

I do about a 15-20% water change a week and now they aren't doing it! I moved the tank around and they are paying no attention to the water and bubbles flowing in. I added more caves and plants and they are loving it. So I really don't know what it was about. I am going to add a air stone just in case, but everything seems to be normal again.

My convicts swim around with them and will sit in the caves with the others, there isn't any aggression between them at all. I guess it all really depends on their personality and I know convicts are known to have a bad temperaments. I mean it could all change as they get older but maybe not since they have been with them since they were little babies. I was being positive and tried my jack dempsy with them but he kept pushing water at them with his tail and charging them, so he will have to stay by himself.

Great to hear, yes keep doing water changes weekly (25%-50%) and you shouldn't have any problems. An airstone will be a big plus also:)

They will have a entire 30gallon to themselves once I get my 55gal. in a few weeks. They're small enough now that I don't worry about them all that much, they get beat up more than they do the beating right now.

Except today came home and found my brothers angel dead in my tank, and the cons eating its eyes. I don't know why he thought it would be a good idea to put it in there with them while he moved his tank.
