Yesterday I was watching my fish swim around and noticed the water seemed slightly cloudy. I looked in further and noticed the cloudiness wasn't caused by particles, it was caused by some creatures. I immediately though it was planaria, but these were actively swimming around (which I don't think planaria does). I'll describe them to the best of my abilities they look like very small, no larger than 1 mm, they are slightly larger near the front. A white colour, and they swim quite oddly. They do so in a jerking sort of fashion, almost as if they move, stop, move, stop very quickly. They bear a striking resemblance to me to a sea monkey (which I believe is a species of brine shrimp). Having owned sea monkeys when I was younger I've also noticed that they swim in very much the same way. I've been feeding freeze dried brine shrimp to my fish, could this be the cause? If not what do you think they could be? They don't seem to be harming my fish, so I'm trying not to worry too much. sorry, just realized this shouldn't be in the Polypterus specific forum.

I've had that same problem, I believe its planaria. It's a sign of bad water quality i think. Wont harm your fish but you should still do weekly waterchanges. It invaded my tank for 4-5 months straight full bloom. Eventually it goes away though. I don't know what else I can tell you but to do weekly 25-30% waterchanges.

Tonight I'm doing a 30% water change and clearing out all of gravel with my brand new gravel cleaner(should have just gone bare tank). I hope this works.

I actually have a question regarding planaria. How did they get into my tank in the first place? Were they introduced by a fish, or are they some sort of larvea of an animal that deposited them in my aquarium?

Despite being annoyed by them and thinking they are absolutely disgusting it's pretty cool how you can just add gravel, water, food and fish in a tank and end up with all sorts of little creatures, it's like a self contained eco-system, however gross it is.

its always there overfeeding causes over population hence now you see them
30% water change less food
this little guys are a good thing in small population dont recycle, stress out your fish

I meant when and how were they introduced? They weren't there when I put the gravel first into the water which was just dechlorinated or were they?
