I had a Texas that would do that all the time. I never seen any Amphilophus cross with Green Terrors. Could be wrong, I have never seen a hybrid of that type before.
 
I thought your GT was a female due to the elognated body. To answer your question about whether fish can lays eggs without a mate. Yes!
 
Just in case it isn't obvious, you'll want to pair them up in a different tank to avoid a massacre.
