A surface skimmer and a protein skimmer are two different things, although they both accomplish the same task.
Surface skimming and agitation break up the proteins that collect on the air water interface.
Protein skimmer remove those proteins from the tank.
Because sound wa not a problem in my fish room i would aim influent so it broke up surface tension above the water line.

In the video below is a protein skimmer is removing proteins from a fresh water pond.
