IN FISH PARADISE
hi guys .. there is a very common action in many tanks of fish like it scratching its body over the tank decor or rocks u know this action it is so weird movement and i was wandering if it is a sign for any water parameters or even it is a something in the fish skin ..

any one have an idea ?!!

Could be a sign of some irritant on the fishes skin or water parameters, but i have seen this in my tanks with no obvious reasons, sometimes i wonder if it could be some sort of territorial display, like a dog or other animal marking its territory.

I have seen a couple of fish in my tank do this and have always wondered what it was they are doing...

Like above I figured they were simply "marking".

Or maybe they have an itch, its not like they have hands to scratch :)

i have seen it alot of times in my tanks and in LFS .. for many kinds of fish some that do not show any territorial display like pacu and koi fish .. i have seen it on pacu alooooooooot

Sounds like ich/velvet but this will appear before the scratching(am I right?)

Like the posters above could be for fun/territorial.

Now you mentioned it ,my tiger barbs always seem to swim together ,circling a particular plant in the tank. This might have nothing to do with your question though

Could be just scratching off old scales. This could be pretty normal behavior as long as they are not taking huge chunks out of their body by doing it.

no i don't guess it is a some sort of marking .. why do a pacu fish 15 or 20 cm long mark a decor piece ??

i think it is a ... may be a shortage of some thing in water parameters .. like salts ??!

while some other times pacu fish do not do that so it is far away from marking ..

so ... ?

but i am not sure of ich .. that guy i saw the pacu doing this movment in his tanks is an professional escapially in SW fish for many years now .. and all the water in all tanks are renewed every few mints .. so far from ich

Ich isn't always visible immediately. So it could still be ich and just because he's a professional doesn't mean his tanks can't get ich. Ich isn't necessarily the sign of a bad or inexperienced fish keeper, it can and does happen to anyone. Plenty of the most experienced fish keepers on here get ich at times.

You also say it might be a lac of salt. I would just bump the temp up and add some salt. This is also the generally accepted solution for ich on here. Even if it isn't ich, the salt treatment and bump in temp aren't going to hurt the fish. Good Luck!

My Fish did were doing that when the ICK parasite was Present in the Tank. I noticed them doing this just before ICK broke out now that I have delt with the ICK They no longer do it.

WATCH FOR ICK

yeah .. then all signs point on ICH .. now it is 90% Ich ..
