Weird relationships

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My female FH's are a bit weird. Big Bertha, my biggest one, currently has 4 minnows as roommates, doesn't seem to mind them being with her and has no interest in eating them so far, it's been about a week so far and she hasn't eaten them like she did with the 11 others lol. My smallest FH, Star, she has a female kirbensis and a Chinese algae eater as her roommates but will absolutely murder anything else I put in with her.

Both are totally different from their father, Jr, who wanted nothing more to do but just murder everything in sight except his lady. Lol it was pretty funny when he had his babies and he would try to attack my cat thru the glass anytime he, Shaddow, would sit down and whatch the fish swim.

Lol or maybe the FH is scared of the algae eater....I also have a CAE, the thing is a boss, only 5 inches long and no one will mess with it... the rainbow shark has tried once or twice. . Big mistake! Lol I dont know what it is but they can be pretty mean little guys... as soon as he feels threatened he stand on his front fins and stretches out his dorsal to look big and posture

My Oscar Brick and BP Boss have a unique situation. They grew up together. At first Boss bullied Brick non stop, then Brick kept growing. Then they fought all the time for months. Each would lose a scale here or there. Then they seemed to have an 'agreement'. You don't mess with me, I don't mess with you.

The parrot can go in the Oscar's space but no other fish can without getting chased. Sometimes they swim together. At times they still 'fuss'. The O will tip the BP backwards and push, then the BP will head butt the O on the side of his head. Brick on occasion will chase Boss but the BP goes right back to where he was chased from. Or Boss maneuvers by flipping over the Oscar's back giving him no target (amazing to see).

They go in each other's sleeping areas too. Brick would cram in Boss's hide (and promptly get stuck). Boss will often rest over in Brick's bed of vines and get cozy. More recently Brick likes to 'cuddle' with Boss on the sand bottom.

Both of them like to bounce around the chocolate Bobo, who is a passive aggressive wimp. Despite Bobo being a big/tall 8" fish he's all size and no strength or speed...so he just avoids trouble or stubbornly allows himself to be pushed around as long as he can grab food (like a speed bump with fins).

Lol I think all chocolate are a bit on the slower lazy side... mine doesnt even like swimming it seems.. he/she will lazily ass down head up float around.. or maybe hes just looking for bugs on the water surface I'm not too sure.. but def not an energetic fish

Ha! This. Bobo drifts slowly to the top to eat OR he waits for food to just drop in his mouth at the bottom. Brick can catch him with ease despite the fact he's way less maneuverable than the choc and can no longer turn in tight corners (too thick, lol). :woot:

Bobo lets me pat his nose, though. Sweet fish but kinda goofy.

Honestly chocolate cichlids always reminded me of what ya would get from cross breeding an Oscar with a severum. They kind of have the severum body still but the face and personality of an Oscar.

At least Oscars and Severums don't take 5 minutes to get to the surface for food...it's like watching a brown blimp lift or something. Then he 'll come all the way to the top and STILL wait for food to just 'drop' in his mouth! So he opens wide just below the surface for pellets...he and Tango (BP) have to be the laziest eaters ever. If pellets aren't right at their nose they won't bother!

So when he 'floats' around the tank the Oscar will run him in laps (THEN he swims!) Or the Parrot gets under his chin and shoves him clean across the tank from one end to the other. Pathetic!

Honestly if Brick didn't chase him he'd get no exercise at all...Bobo sat in his house all day for 2 weeks. I thought he had stopped eating. Wrong! He finally rolled out looking like a beach ball on roids.

When he's feeling 'tough' he'll take a cheap shot at Boss when the parrot swims by his house then duck his head back in. Boss has a long memory though. The parrot will pop him several times as his own 'payback.'

Bobo reminds me of an O on downers. Not very inquisitive and won't spend energy much at all. But he does come up to greet me (or floats up). Other than Brick he's my only fish I can pat on the head.
