I just set up a new tank and I am in the process of cycling it. I put a grapevine in for deco and over night a weird "smokey: transparent slime showed up covering the entire vine. Does anyone know What it is? I have tried getting pics, but it is so transparent that my phone camera can't quite catch it.

help!! lol.. Any info about what this might be would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

I'm not going to be much help, but I had the same thing years ago in a fully cycled tank. I have only seen it on the grapewood and I never could get rid of it. I tried taking the piece back out and completely scrubbing it, soaking it in super hot saltwater, but it always came back. It didn't seem to hurt anything, I just didn't like the way it looked. I eventually gave up and gave it to someone that had a lizard setup.

LOL... Yea I hope I can figure out how to get rid of it... I wonder if there are any invertebrates that will munch on it... hmmmmm.....

I've always heard not to use grapevine in a fish tank because it decomposes quickly and can ruin your water quality.

Uncured grapevine contains a ton of sugar that will serve a feast to bacteria, fungi, and molds. Get some shrimp, dwarf crays, or plecs in there to keep the growths in check until all the sugars leech out.

AWESOME! Thanks guys, I will put one of my plecos in that tank! Shrimp wont last long cause of my dat and EBJD, but the pleco will be fine.

And as for it decomposing quickly, I will keep an eye on it, Thanks everyone!

I just looked at a couple 4' pieces the other day that appeared to have been sand blasted. Was thinking how nice one would look as a center piece in my new 100 gallon that I will be setting up within the week. Now I have second thoughts......
Thanks for the input......
