Weird worm like things?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep those are the same things i had also , I would just give everything a good cleaning and do a water change and a dose of salt and you should be fine, I know when I seen them in my tank I freaked out... I done thought it was some kind of parasites and thought I was going to loose my fish, but like I said I haven't seen them since and it has been over 8 months ago so i hope they stay gone.

those are planaria which are non parasitic flatworms. They are brought about by overfeeding the tank. They're harmless, but they do indicate declining water conditions.

ding ding ding-winner! :D
Yup-planaria harmless don't over feed and vacuum your water more.

If you have gravel you need to clean it out as small amounts of food can be under there and feeding them. Other then that just make sure you remove any food they don't eat and good water changes should get rid of them.

Coop hit the nail right on the head.
vacuum the gravel more and remove uneaten food as soon as possible.
some might got into the filter already so will be a good idea to clean your filter media as well.

small fish like neon or danios will eat them, so you could get a bunch in and have them finish off those worms aside from vacuum the gravel more often

I just watched the video and those are pretty disgusting looking. I can see why someone would freak out when they see that.

Out of curiosity, what do you feed them? Just curious because the snails didn't get to the uneaten food.

praziquantel should kill planaria. I personally wouldn't use it, but if you're looking for a med that will get rid of them that would be the one I'd use. I could explain how it works...but I don't really feel like it. Google is an amazing resource.

Personally I would just add some tetras or mollies, and tighten up on my water changes. They'll eat it before the Ps eat them, and they're cheap enough so that it doesn't matter if the P's eat them.

I used zebra danios, and they worked great eating off those planaria and cheap too.
