Last night, on the way home from work, I stopped at LFS and stumbled upon a beautiful royal pl*co! He was around 4.5" in size and had perfect fins. Apparently this fish just came in with shippment and so they had him for no more than an hour or so. I did the usual visual check of health -- no sunken eyes, nice plump belly, dorsal kept mostly errect -- good royal in top shape. I just had to snatch him up!

For now he is the only inhabitant of a 65G tank which I just finished redecorating and cycling. Water is very soft, PH is barely above 6, and temperature is 80F. Whats most important (and I figured this guy could benefit from this), is that since for a while this was the only empty tank in my disposal, I was using it to soak some driftwood. In fact, it is simply FILLED with wood!

Something strange may be happenning with my new aquisition... I'm guessing its nothing to worry about, little guy is probably not fully settled in but still I would like to check with the experts...Considering that this tank is full of food (wood), I expected royal to be constantly munching on something, moving up and down driftwood pieces. Alas, so far he spent 24 hour attached to the same spot on tanks side right behind filter intake. The only sign of life (and apparently digestion) is in the form of strings of poop on the sand. Then again, this could be from his previous meal. Should I be concerned? Last night I dropped in a few hikari sinking carnivore pellets to supplement his diet. I cant tell if they are gone or not but I will try some algae waffers tonight.. What the heck?! I thought these guys were voracious "wood-o-vores"!

Let him settle. They are herbavores, and will not eat much in the way of protein, I would offer mostly fresh veggies, and the wood.

:iagree: Try some peas, carrots, zucchini or Cuk...I usually put the veggies in just before lights out at night...by morning the veggies are either gone or turned into canoes..

Let's see some pics...........

Sometimes plecs will feed right away, other times, it can take days or weeks to settle in properly. It may also be happiest exploring and eating when your fast asleep. I wouldn't say don't feed algae wafers but they aren't suitable for the main part of there diet, and some are really pretty crap. Start feeding fresh vegetables, examples:
Cucumber
Potatoes (I would soak these for a long time and wash thoroughly as they contain a lot of starch that is bad for water quality, although otherwise a great food source)
Sweet Potatoes
Shelled Peas
Broccoli
Carrots
Lettuces
Cabbage
Courgette
Yams
Parsnips
Squash
Suede
Spinach
Beans

Yes, this was apparently a false alarm. Found him munching on wood this morning

Sounds like your fish has a great environment. Royals are major hiders and secretive eaters (atleast mine is). Veiwing pleasure usually only happens when I'm cleaning the tank. Mine seems to like algae wafers more than fresh veggies or anything frozen.:screwy:
Give us a pic if you get the chance.
