Thanks ... wish I could've seen the pikes body ... In 26 years of fishing its never happened again.
I wouldn't expect it too either! That's nuts!
I would have to say on my trip to the Chesapeake I was night fishing alone (none of my family would have let me roam the bay alone on a kayak at night so I would sneak out when everyone went to sleep) and I had gotten into this grotto like area and was fishing for bait (my mission was a sand tiger

) so I caught some croakers (or grunters idk I just call em what the guy who owned the house I stayed in called em) they make this kind of fart like sound out of water. Great for bait. As I was reeling one in I saw it in the glow stick light (had duct taped glow sticks all around my kayak so other boats would see me) I was just taking it out of the water and a friggin snake jumped in my kayak after it!!
Full grown Chesapeake bay water snake, about 4 to 5 feet long but not really thick, grabbed the fish from in between us and slinked over to the other side of the kayak and began eating it. Didn't want it to eat the hook so I yanked the fish away, and it came at me so I threw a hoodie over it, unhooked the fish, took the hoodie off, and was holding the fish in my hand over the side of the boat. So the snake jumped out after it (the fish btw was messed up because of the snake biting it and it being out of water) so the snake snagged it and jetted into the weeds.
Let's just say fishing by kayak at night in the Chesapeake Bay is a WORLD away from fishing by kayak at night on Lake Erie (as that is my usual spot). Got bit by a spotted sea trout, and a dog fish, almost by that snake too. Got stung by jellyfish multiple times (moon jelly, didn't hurt but didn't tickle either) and nearly got stabbed by a ray. I'm not sure if the ray even had a barb, I believe it was a cow ray I caught night fishing. Everything looked creepier in that green glo stick light haha
