people make stuff out of pvc pipes for their tanks all the time, do you guys regularly chemical weld the pieces when you join them? i never hear someone mention that as a step when they're showing off their fantastic diy inventions.

the reason i ask is that i want to connect the overflow that came pre-drilled on my craigslist tank to the intake on my fluval canister, but the fittings are different sizes, so i was going to use some fancy reducing fittings to get the 1" pvc down to the half-inch or whatever hosing for the canister. on that note, does anyone know what the hosing is made of? is it pvc? i was wondering if i should try to chemical weld the last piece of the pvc fittings to the hosing, or if a metal hose clamp would be enough to make it a water tight seal over the fitting. any help would be greatly appreciated. if a diagram is needed i can upload a pic too. thanks!

They have something that chemically joins the pvc to itself...I forget what it is called off the top of my head but its what I have always used and it works really well in minutes.

yeah i was thinking of the pvc solvent to clean/soften the plastic and then a pvc cement to join them FOREVA! so then yes, i suppose i should go get that

is the hose clamp going to be enough to keep the seal between that last grey fitting and the fluval hosing? i'm going to cement all the other plastic to plastic joinings, except of course the threaded seal between the two pieces on either side of the glass itself, cuz that has a rubber ring on the wet side, and i'm going to super-silicone the other side. does that sound reasonable? i'm still a noob with all this aquarium stuff.

Typically, anything that's safe for potable water will be safe for your fish:)
