Well-Established Ropefish Tank... and something's wrong.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's really odd for them to be so inactive, or uninterested in food. I tried feeding this morning, and two came out to eat, the male and one of the girls. She looks kinda.. full actually. Like bloated somewhat half-way down and just below her throat. I don't think the other two girls look like that, and they're not even showing up. It's too strange. ><

Also the bichir is a great big baby, so I don't worry about him. The plecos would pick on him if they felt so inclined, I wager!

So one of my female sis breathing heavily and barrel rolling, laying listlessly to one side. I knew something was up. I'll be talking with some contacts in pet stores when they get in.

At first I was going to say temperature is too low, but the barrel roll doesn't fit in to that theory..
Is your sen unaffected?

He seems fine. One of the other females is acting strange in a new way too, spacing out. She was perched upright, like a stiff cobra, just looking at me and breathing normally. My temp is a solid 78, like always. I'm just bowled over, this is so out of the blue.

I have a 53g breeder tank with a group of 4 rope fish, 1 sen bichir, and a pair of small bushy plecos. It is moderately planted with both aquatic plants and pothos ivy. The lighting is subdued. The temp is normal. The water perams should be fine.
You said peramiters should be fine. Did you check them or are you guessing? The "should" is a bit confusing.

I say should because I haven't done anything all that unusual. I've done an ammonia test and it's saying a bit over 0.25. I don't know why it's even that high.

I've had these rope fish between 2.5 and .5 years.

Sorry to hear. I just saw this thread. I have had an entire tank of (5) Ropes mysteriously die but my other polys were fine (I had a senegal and ornate in the same tank). I was sick to find a reason becuase it took me years to get that many Rope Fish. I have talked with store owners who have lost their entire stock with no reason. I think it may be a disease (or baterial infection) specific to only Rope Fish. If caught early, you can save some. After my first encounter, it happended again, but this time I treated the tak with Metafix. I lost one, but the survivors did OK. Unfortunately, it appears I have one with eye damage though. It has a catarct in one eye but otherwise it is healthy. The only common factor between these two incidents was the introduction of new Rope Fish into an established tank. Have you heard of anyone else with similar problems?
