Sorry to hear that..

I always make it a habit now that once i refill the water.. then next step immediately is put the prime inside..

It used to be a pain.. but.. somehow got used to it..

at least the fish that died. aren't expensive fish.. bala can be replaced...

But sorry for your lost...
its 99% of the time the first thing I do. siphon water, add prime, then add water. I just completely missed the second step

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I would like to add that the water supply, if city water, will fluctuate. I've had mine come down the pipe anywhere from 0 NO3 to 40 ppm NO3, I've seen ammonia in it from time to time and I have also seen PO4 off the charts. It's not a bad idea to check it before water changes. They dump chemicals and stuff at the treatment plant along with their general upkeep and sometimes these things come down the pipe. Like I stated earlier I have seen NO3 at 40ppm. Federal guidlines say no more than 30 ppm NO3 if I'm not mistaken. I test before water changes. If I see something weird it's usually gone in a day. Good luck.

I believe the limit is supposed to be 10ppm of NO3.

Sorry for your loss and don't beat your self up about it...!

We have all been there... We have all done our share stupid stuff and that is how we have learned all that we have learned. Which never happens when everything goes smoothly.

As for me, I am glad that I have Africans and premix, (rift salt, ph buffer, Stress Coat and a dash Stress Zyme), my "new" water at (82 degrees) in 3 or 4 5G buckets before I remove ANY of the old water... I am just in the habit now of doing it that way so the salts have time to disolve really well....

I would think that even if I didn't have the africans I still get the water ready before... especially for a large W/C.

Good Luck!

your water must be seriously laden with chlorine or nitrates/nitrites for your fish to have such problems in only 20 minutes. i would get a test kit and see what your reading are straight from the tap

ive forgot to add prime several times, and ive never had any ill effects. i even did it once with 2 stingrays in a tank, and they were fine. i feel for ya man, hope everything pulls out ok.

edit: if you keep posting all these updates, and this has all happened in no time at all, your water is pure chlorine and i would not be drinking it personally. either that, or soap or something got into the tank by accident. no water should do anything near this to your fish in 30 minutes.

if you claim your bichirs are losing slimecoat now, this is something much more than just not adding prime. theres tons of us that have forgot to add it at times im sure.
my untreated water will kill fish within 20min also. jersey water is awesome!

i never use conditioners and i always do 50% tank changes wtf

I always did the same up until about three months ago. After reading enough threads like this I decided to start using prime with every water change. If you buy it in two liter bottles it really isn't all that expensive once you figure out how long it will last. My fish are worth a lot more than I spend on prime.

Luckily I have never had a single experience that caused me to start using it, I wanted to start before I had a story like this. However, there is no way that I can know for sure if some of the fish I have lost over the years would still be alive had I been treating the water.
