My Gymnothorax P lasted me a whole 20hrs or so. Added 16oz of sea salt prior to adding. Anyone know what the white slime might be? Params are normal. Ammonia/nitrate 0.00 nitrite 0.25 and temp about 81*

I noticed he was breathing hard and swimming a lot hrs after acclimation (picked him up in the evening). In the morning he was breathing normal but still swimming back and forth. Left for the day and just came home to a dead guy. The rest of the tank mates are fine. 100% positive aggression was not the cause (no visual damage on eel either).

I'm pretty sure no one asked for idiotic replies but if I did, thank you for your response.

First off... sorry for your loss.. cool fish.

My friend (charney) has a group for a couple years now keeping them very successfully full fresh.

WHere did you get them from? Were they kept fresh or brackish? How big is the tank? what are the tankmates? How did you acclimate?

Sorry to hear, they look like they'd be really cool to keep.

How long do you think it was in the tank for after it died? I can't think of any white slime that'd cover him unless he was dead for a while. Possibly ammonia burn, but doubtful since your readings are at 0. Maybe he just didn't travel well? I don't have any prior experience with them, so not sure if they don't acclimate easily.

Picked up from Fugupuff.
I acclimated like any other fish. Float bag for 10-15 min to even out water temp. Open bag and add air stone and add a cup of water. Wait 5 min then do this process 2 more times and taking out some water in between. Done this lots of times.
Tank mates-
7" discus
2 4-5" Cichla pinima
5" angel fish.
I dont get any aggression from these guys and I would check on him every chance i could with the light on or off (its a new fish, we all do lol).
RenaX3, sponge filter, turbo twist and a nice size potho on top of the 50gl. Over filtered like most in the hobby.

The tank mates shouldnt be a problem, Wes is where charney got his too... pretty sure wes keeps them in full fresh to. You may have shocked them with the salt/ or is your PH real low for the discus? that could burn them.

Did you contact fugupuff?

I dont mess with water. PH is 8.0 right out the faucet.
Id guess I was away from the house about 7hrs. I can only guess he passed or started showing signs of dying at least 2hrs into my departure. There was also a body print of white film on the bottom of the bare bottom tank (like a scene from "first 48" lol).

I want to try another but need to figure this out first lol

How are you checking PH? I'm under the impression that water is pretty soft out there, any chance the reading could be off? Could it be TDS/Conductivity/PH shock from water being way different at your place and Wes's? I can't think of any other reason a fish would die while all the other established fish in the tank are just fine...... Pretty much should be the cause by default unless it was a rough or cold ride home.....

Did it have some place to hide? I know they seem to really enjoy a retreat of some sort.

I'd think that in order to get some serious slime production you're going to need some pretty dissimilar water or some other form of stress, not sure why else there would be slime unless it was just from being dead a while.

Only thing I can think of is IF they're being kept in any amount of salt that will drive conductivity/TDS way up. IF your water is kind of soft then it might be too much of a difference to allow a smooth transition. I know that mine weren't happy when they arrived, but no slime of any sort. But I have higher conductivity/TDS then anyone I've compared numbers with so a brackish to my water transition is no big deal in terms of numbers.....

Really sorry for your loss man..... I hate being so jazzed about some new fish then see this happen to someone I recommended then to. :(
