So, I know the following:

Discus do not mix well with Angels, for a variety of reasons.
Discus need specific, pristine water quality.
Other tank mates should be carefully selected for Discus.

But, what did I do, you ask? Yep, I bought two beautiful Discus. They're about an inch and half long. I put them in my 125 with 35 or 40 assorted tetras, 10 or so Cories, 6 two-inch Clown Loaches, and, yes, the breeding pair of Angels.

This was last night. My observations so far:

They hang out in the middle 1/3 of the tank, and stay together. At night, they hang around on the bottom part of the tank, stealing food from the catfish. They sometimes venture to the top portion, but not often.

They've eaten. Boy, have they eaten! I feed Freshwater Frenzy, Hikari Micro Wafers, and, after the lights go out, Shrimp pellets and Algae Wafers.
These two really eat!

They aren't getting picked on at all. I expected a little scuffle between them and the Angels, at least. But, it is a six-foot tank, and I didn't take that into account.

Extra info:

The tank is heavily planted (six Amazon Swords which are over a foot tall and about a foot wide).

Temp is at 78 degrees.

Ammonia, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate - 10, and I just did another water change today. Nitrate stays at 10-15 with bi-weekly water changes of about 40%. I plan on now doing weekly water changes of the same size, a 55 gallon barrel. pH - 7.2, KH - 4. I test bi-weekly, but now plan on testing weekly, since their addition. Filtration: XP3, XP4, and some crappy HOB that's only there because we can hook up a surface skimmer to it -- so there's a surface skimmer. I don't dose anything, and we do use CO2, which is also carefully monitored.

So, my question is, am I doomed? Be honest, but as kind as possible!

If I'm not completely doomed, and you can find some pointers to give, that would be great, too! Stories of Discus enjoying long lives in community tanks would be wonderful and appreciated! ;)

A few things,in my experience discus are not as fussy or as hard to look after as most people believe or make out,ive been keeping them for 13 years.
Ive had two pairs of breeding angels in with our discus and they tend to fight amongst themselves but if they do pick on the discus, they give it back as good as they get.
The other tankmates you mention shouldnt be a problem unless you have buenos airies tetras as they nipped the discus also serpaes are not ideal.
In the past ive had big sailfin plecs in there but i think this disturbed them at night.
Also we had 5 pictus cats in there with no problems at all believe it or not
at the minute we have around 12 discus from 3" to 6" and the tankmates are 3 angels, cardinals, lots of cories a butterfly fish, a female krib and some other dithers

But i do see a problem because your discus must be so young at that size. They need feeding alot and you have them in a large tank and the size difference to the angels could be a problem.
Also if you had done a bit of research you would find that discus do alot better when there are more of them, what i did when i got these was to buy 6 and to put them in a smaller tank so one you can feed them easier and do wc more often and they should grow very quickly to a size when the difference between the angels wont matter

I also once in an emergency had to put my 6" florida gar in there overnight and the discus very nearly killed him, they had nipped all his fins to bits and no the gar didnt eat any of the smaller fish(hes a bit useless)

Also i feed them anything, they love chasing small mealworms about and the cheap catfish pellets dont last long, but i would definitely buy some more and grow them up some first.
Hope this helps

cheers steve

Hi, thank you for your advice!

I did think about purchasing more, but didn't... I might do that.

As for feeding, I have a sea squirt, which is basically a glorified turkey baster LOL, and they are eating out of that. So I should be able to do frequent target feedings of bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, algae, etc (the stuff that's in the Freshwater Frenzy).

Again, thanks for your advice!

Thats ok buddy but definitely get more and you want to be feeding them about 4 times a day to make them grow to their potential, thats why i suggest the small tank so you can do a wc everyother day or 3,i think ours were in a 90l to grow them up for a few months
I use 75% ro and 25% treated tap water on ours and they also like a bit of prawn occasionally.

Cheers steve

:WHOA: Well spotted that man:headbang2,put your temp up to 82/84 now!!!!

Sorry, i didnt spot that:(

Your discus likely won't live too long at quarter size in a 125 planted, community tank. They are babies and require special care until they grow out some. Might as well have flushed the money you spent for them down the toilet.

Discus much better in groups at least 6, and juv discus much better 86+ cause will make it far away from sickness. Adult discus between 82 to 86. I do everyday WC straight from tap :)

1.5" is bigger than any quarter I have in my pocket.
