Well, I've gone and done it... be kind, please!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes pictures can be deceiving. If it's that small, it may be nothing to worry about at this time. Of course, you don't usually see "babies" in a planted tank either. It still concerns me that such small fish are in a planted tank though. That is based on many years of keeping these "critters". Good luck!

I think the term "undesirable" is a relative term. 9 times out of 10 , I prefer to to pick the ones that nobody else wants just because they have some flaw. I understand for show and breeding purposes you want the best traits. But for me, I love my deformed big guy, and my itty bitty baby with a pointy face :) By now, my LFS holds any deformed fish for me, and unless I know its just not going to work out, I usually take them.

Please keep in mind that these fish were in the tank for about six hours when I took the photos... I'll take some more once they're settled in!

i dont think you have to take the angels out. just as long as you keep more discus that angelfish i think you're ok :), Also I trust Hans' A LOT he has years of experience and countless awards. You CAN do the planted tank thing its just harder. the reason for the BB and water changes everyday is because it keeps is simple for who ever is taking care of the fish. I kept my fish in a BB tank and did 100% water changes everyday in a 40 gal. But now that the fish are in a 180 (with an Arowana and soon to be 2 rays) I find that they are much more active and less stressed (happier you might say) and i have substrate in the tank and soon i will have plants. My point is take everything with a grain of salt, because like politics, everyone has an opinion on how to raise fish right.

Oh and by the way, you have a VERY beautiful tank :)

Thank you! That tank is more work than our indoor pond LOL but it is worth it.

And I do thank everyone for their input! I really appreciate hearing everyone's points of view, and about the only suggestion I haven't followed so far (the dissenters are saying this is the most important one that I've ignored!) is to take them out!

Also, you're totally right about the Angels. If they had eyebrows, they would've been raised when I added those last four Discus. There has been no sign of aggression at all from the Angels since they became so outnumbered.

By the way, these fish really just piggies with fins. They stare at me constantly. One poster said she feeds six times a day. Should I up it from four to six? Or are they just going to stare at me anyway?

They are always going to act hungry, but at that size I would feed them more times per day. Then once they are about 4" cut back to 3-4 times a day and at about 1 year 1-2 times a day.

don't feel bad. All of us have made impulse buys before.

LOL they weren't an impulse buy. I can link you to many, many articles I have read which actually advise to keep Discus in planted tanks. Sure, there are going to be folks that don't agree with anything, but it's not like I bought them and stuffed them in a 20 gallon, uncycled tank.

And if the first two weren't an impulse buy, the second batch of four definitely wasn't. I don't make impulse buys. I learned my lesson with my RTC, who has cost about six grand since he made his way into our house.

I would hope that the posts I've made would reflect my interest in responsible fish keeping, as well as my intent to provide for these fish, even though I haven't dedicated a species tank to them.

As for the feeding, I will begin to feed them more often. Thank you for your advice, snoopy.
