i may be getting one thats from c-list for 20 bucks. 8 foor round by 30 high. says it comes with some sort of filteration system

I am assuming that is a pool filter.
Those don't work like aquarium filters, they are more or less just to suck big stuff out of the water. They won't do much for fish.

when I ran my pool I used the filter that came with it to keep the water moving and nothing more, it was worthless for anything else. You can look up my pool thread on this site. I used a fx5 and a HUGE Brute trash can stuffed full of media as my filtration. Did you disclose to the person paying the bills that they can expect at least a 50 dollar jump in power monthly?

edit:

I just read this that you posted while i was typing:

so what kind of filteration system am i looking at getting/building?

I think that you need to do a lot more research on your own and then ask questions about what you saw that you didnt understand instead of doing nothing but dreaming off all these huge tanks. There are tons of threads on here that you can read and learn from. Most of which will require you to tailor them to your own needs.

have you even considered cost?
and im not just talking about the initial outlay but also the maintenance of keeping all these large bodies of water in tip top condition.
I can tell you that without a reasonably well payed job your dreams will not come to life. You dont seem to have put much thought into finances and budgets.

as has been mentioned it is also worth while making sure that your room mate is ok with all this. make detailed plans and ask if its ok and if something isnt then get him to mark it off.
