well water treatment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have raised my fish for 23 years on well water. I add nothing. I use it from the softner too. Helps with the hardness. My water is high in iron. My fish seem to thrive. consider it a blessing. It is so much fresher than the crap that can come from city water. NO CHLORINE!

I will check my water parameters and see, i live on a farm in central illinois where agriculture is big, so i imagine there might be some issues with the water, but i will not know for sure until i check. thanks for all the help

really, you should only have to worry about contamiants if you are on an exceptionally shallow aquifer or there are abanodoned wells in filed or low areas that runnof will go to (feedlots, field runnof etc). You should be ok, but is best to check.

Where at in IL?

I use well water, it's very soft water here due to the sandy soil, for my pH level was around 6.0 I raised it by adding crushed coral to the gravel, this raised the pH level to 7.0. The only additive I use is Amquel+ during my water changes to control the nitrate level. Well water has a tendancy to promote algea growth, I limit the time I leave the lights on and definitely away from direct sunlight.

Have it checked. My house was on well water for years with no real problems with the fish, but the water was very hard. Calcium deposits everywhere the water evaporated off from, like the underside of the hood, tons of iron, which turns your white laundry a nice shade of yellow and sulfur. The sulfur smell was eleminated by a carbon filter that I replace often. PH was 8.4, I'm happier on city water where the only thing I have to deal with is a little chlorine.

USED WELL WATER FOREVER AND IT WAS GREAT, ADDED NOTHING. WE RECENTLY MOVED TO TOWN AND I CANT STAND THE WATER. I WONDER HOW MY FISH FEEL:WHOA:
