Well worth the money? fly river turtle

the turtle's shell skin is sloughing off little by little. The dead skin is peeling off in small bits (2mm in diameter). Is that normal? PH is around 7.2 and I added some more aquarium salt.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. I'm not an expert but I believe that that's the turtles natural way of adjusting to a different environment.

I've done plenty of research on frt's but I've never been able to afford one but I believe you'll notice it shed all of its skin as it grows throughout its life, as all reptiles. At least all the soft shell turtles I've kept have always shed the skin off their shells.

As for your research and your experience with softshell, does the skin slough off all at once or does it gradually shed little by little? I'm starting to learn more and more about these guys.

It was really hard to tell cuz there were a lot of rocks and decor that would just tear the sheds apart but I believe it would all loosen up at the same time and as the turtles swam, dug and hid, pieces would tear off by either getting caught on stuff or by the turtle actually tearing it off with their nails.

Does it look like there's wounds under the skin where it's peeling or is it just the entire shell's skin is peeling?

No wound is visable. just a few peices of the skin peeling off. He is sleeping now. It was the first time i've seen the turtle sleeping during the afternoon (I know it's the regular sleeping time for them). I got a bit worried when I walked home and saw my turtle in the sand motionless with his flippers outstretched and eyes closed.

I wouldn't really be worried then. Just keep doing what you're doing. I'm pretty sure that's just its way of acclimating to the new environment but I'm not 100% on this. Hopefully oddball will come back and pitch in his expertise and experience.

just noticed that the places where the skin has peeled off has some pale/white patches. i'm not sure if it's fungus. The turtle is swimming fine.

I tried googling pictures of fungus on the FRT. NO luck.

Anybody got clear diagnostic pics?

Fungus on turtles look almost identical to it on fish. If its kinda fuzzy lookin then its fungus. If it's just white patches, its scar tissue and it will color back up in time.

thanks so much for the help! i'll do a WC tommorow. i don't want to stress out the turtle too much. Is 50% ok?

It depends on if you already started converting it to brackish or not. I remember you saying you were gonna try it out with your armatus so I'm guessing you haven't so the wc should be fine, but if you have, you're gonna want to match the salinity with that of the tank first then do it once that is done. You usually have to let the salt mix for about a day before you do a wc with it so that the salt is thoroughly mixed.
