It is counter to what I'd expect - wels are moody fish and sulk for long times after any change in the tank, or routine, diet, etc., plus any fish would feel more stressed when their hide has been suddenly gone. So, I don't understand the increased appetite at all. Ours BTW has not been feeding much in the past couple months, as seems to be usual for it during this time of year. So the season doesn't support the increased appetite of yours either.

Many fish are stubborn and it takes training and fasting to get them to start recognizing new types of offered feed as feed. And many large fish can fast for weeks and months before developing strong enough hunger to try new feed types.

Been a while since I saw him eat that much, probably years. He is most usually satisfied with one mullet piece, and even that is sometimes spat out.
