Wels catfish, albino, ~10"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Interesting input from YT comments:

2025-ws As far as I know, Albino is growing at a slow pace / But your Albino Welles catfish is growing very well / He seems very happy with his current life…

Fish-Story Thank you. But I've never known or read that albino animals grow to smaller sizes versus the normal colored kin. How do you know or learn this?

2025-ws I'm a member of Naver Cafe, a large tropical fish in Korea, and I learned it from many experts there. Generally, red-tailed catfish can grow up to 4.5 to 5 feet in large tanks, but albinos grow much slower compared to the same period. So albinos are valuable for ornamental purposes in Korea (because the tank is small). ..... I don't know if it gets smaller, but it "grows much slower than usual." Experts in Korea usually have tanks at home (1800 x 800 x 800), but those with large tanks have seen it up to 3600 x 1200 x 1000. ....... If you had a regular "wells catfish" and not an albino, it would have been much bigger.

Fish-Story Thank you. I've never had an albino RTC. I don't know anyone who had one long enough so that I could ask them about the growth. Them do seem to grow slower or smaller or both but I've no concrete examples of numbers.

2025-ws I asked domestic experts. In summary, it's a mutant, so it's very slow to grow.

wednesday13 wednesday13 Russ what do you think of this or know about this?

The Great White, the 6ft wels catfish is surprisingly inapt at stopping the bullying by Wabebo, the 3ft Indian Shovelnose catfish:

Tough to watch that guy get harassed...hopefully he figures out his power one of these days and fights back lol... the AOR looks thick and aggro. It sure did put on some bulk. Some good evidence regardless of how placid this species is. The only reports of wels being super aggressive is when theres one on a nest of eggs. Thanks for the shout out my friend! In this case, i hope im proven wrong tho and the tables turn for the great whites sake.

Six feet! I knew he was big, but...wow!

That fish is one of MFK's iconic and timeless monsters. I try not to anthropomorphize fish or other animals, but...if I had that fish in a community and somebody started to pick on him...the transgressor, regardless of species, would be removed to another tank...or to a frying pan...immediately. :rip

Thank you Russ. Your input is always highly sought after. Yeah, the "baby / placid" label is stuck so far. What's also consistent is that T Texasrockwell 's wels has been in a tough, competitive community for a long time and is of far smaller size (4ft?) than ours although we both bought them at the same time IIRC. I think this observation explains why: the wels are easily offended and stop feeding while sulking.

All fair, yes, of course. I'd kick the ISN out already but the plan has been to move all big cats from the jumbo 4500 gal into this 25K gal - the RTCs, hybrids, paroons, jau, and piraiba. I'd like to see how the dust settles down then. I might choose to move the wels, who knows, if I finish the 10K by then and it holds water. This is all risky too. Jau will more than likely claim the alpha status but the ISN will continue harassing his favorite targets - the piraiba, the paroons, and (i really hope not) the wels now being added to the list.
