Wels Catfish Tank (Theoretical)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The wels is mainly inhabiting regions which are only in summer really warm, and even then temperatures over 20°C are not common. In winter the waters even often freeze at the surface. But still the wels is very well doing in warm water, in fact it really flourish when it is keept in water over 20°C. The temperature for optimum growth is about 26° C, so it would be no problem to keep a wels in a tank with tropical conditions. I have read about people which keept them in warm water, and the growth was extreme, the only problem was that they did outgrow their tanks in a very short time.

here some info ,one guy had one at 4 inches and he feeded it once week and it grew 3ft in four years and it was still 3ft when it was more then 10 years old. I also find that they grow down when they hit 3ft. i also found a another guy who have one it took him two years to grow is 40 iches but there is nohting about how many times he feed it. i also so found out that most wels get to 4ft to 5ft and anything bigger then 6ft are very rare and most of the big records are in the 1800s and in the wild it takes two year to get them about 40cm to 50cm.

Current British Record ... R Garner from Withy Pool, Henlow - 62lb

The Wels catfish was imported to Britain in 1880 but due to our cold weather goes into semi-hibernation throughout our coldest months limiting their size here compared to Europe.

i didnt know that. thanks for the information. if probably be able to get it to 6ft or over if i tried and put the right fish in its tank.

Of course it is important to feed a wels enough to enable a fast growth, and the temperature is important too. And like in all other fish too, its growth slows down with age. If you don´t give them much food they won´t grow much. Here´s a link to a site of a guy who had some wels for several months in a tank:

He bought 6 which were 4-6 cm long and 3-4 weeks old. During the first week the smallest was eaten by another wels. The temperature in the tank was 22-24° C. After one and a half month they were 8-10 cm, and after five months the largest of them was already more than 25 cm long, and were too large for the tank, so they were given away.

In commercial breeding ponds the young wels reach a weight of 1,5 kg in only 9 months.

This is a comparably large wels in the zoo of Stuttgart:

nice wels. yea i would only get two wels in the beginning but put them in their own tanks until they grow to a foot or two long then put them into the big tank with each other and other fish, then they could grow to whatever length they can get to.
