Wels Catfish

It is an outdoor pond, i probably wouldn't see them a ton but i have had speckled trout in it previously, as well as a large number of unwanted Koi or goldfish (which were put there by the previous owners of my house and property who were the ones who got Ducks Unlimited to construct the pond). Have never had too much trouble seeing them around the sides, i also find that you can toss feed to them and they will come up to the top after it and right into the sides, I expect a catfish would do the same. I am not sure about the exact depth as the pond was already present on my property when i bought it but it seems to be very deep and the fish that are present never seem to have any trouble surviving the winter.I definitely wouldn't mind being rid of the goldfish, its been a few years since i payed to have it stocked with trout, so there are probably only a few of those left as from my experiences they generally don't spawn in ponds. i did get one really nice sized trout out of there last year which must have been in there for a few years. I actually used to have a couple of pictures of it on my computer, not sure if they are still on it or not. I definitely would be willing to order a few, i have always had a keen interest in catfish and it would be neat to own one of the giants of the family.

There's one on aqua bid. Arapimag has one in his 50k. Wish I could get one theyre my fav catfish but there hella mean and would outgrow my 1500 in a few years :(

I chatting with a buddy that works at the LFS (Toronto) and he mentioned that he could order them. Planning a pond? Possibly one that results in mysterious disappearance of neighbourhood cats and small dogs?

Which store is this?

That would be insane... Although I would begin to get nervous about getting in the pond if I ever had to do some maintenance after a few years...

Hello...

I assume you are fishing this pond?

"i did get one really nice sized trout out of there"

I would feel really, really bad if I bought a fish as a pet, put it in a pond, then ended up catching it on a fishing pole later on.

I love fishing, and I have stocked ponds before. But searching out, buying, shipping and caring for a specific fish is different than stocking.

Just my thoughts...

i don't fish it anymore, i had it stocked with speckled trout a few years back for the purpose of fishing and used to then but there aren't really any of them left, as from my experiences they don't spawn in a pond. I certainly would never buy a fish as a pet and then try to catch it on a rod later on.As i mentioned i have always had an interest in catfish and if i am able to purchase one of these fish as a pet it would be solely for that purpose.

I think Wels are really cool looking too. I definately agree that they would keep your duck and Koi populations in check (and any raccoons small otters or children who happened to get in your pond).....but you would need to stock that pond with fast breeding fish to replace what the Wels would eat; for us to know if it was possible we would need to know your pond size and dimensions (approximate).
